Toothache & Pain

Cavity Pain in Children

When a cavity reaches the sensitive inner layers of a tooth, it aches, and it won't heal on its own. Prompt, gentle care brings relief and keeps the fix small.

Same-day relief

An aching cavity gets seen quickly, often the day you call.

Gentle, natural repair

Usually a tooth-colored filling that blends right in.

Stops the spread

Treating it now prevents a bigger repair later.

How to Tell It's a Cavity

Cavity pain often shows up with sweets, temperature, or while chewing, and you may see a dark spot or hole in the tooth. The ache can come and go at first, then become more constant as the decay deepens. Any of these signs is worth a visit.

How We Treat a Painful Cavity

We gently remove the decay and restore the tooth, usually with a tooth-colored filling or, for a larger cavity, a crown. If decay has reached the nerve, pulp therapy relieves the pain and saves the tooth.

Why Waiting Makes It Worse

A cavity never heals on its own. Decay keeps spreading, and an ache that needs a simple filling today can become a nerve infection needing pulp therapy, a crown, or an extraction later. The pain easing for a while doesn't mean the problem is gone, so the kindest move for your child (and your budget) is treating it promptly.

A hurting cavity has a simple ending: gentle treatment today, and a comfortable kid tonight.

Common Questions About Cavity Pain

Will a cavity stop hurting on its own?

Sometimes the pain eases for a while, but the cavity does not heal and usually gets worse. Treating it is the only way to truly resolve the ache.

Does fixing a cavity hurt?

We numb the area so the visit is comfortable, and we offer sedation for anxious children. Most kids are surprised by how easy it is.

Does a cavity in a baby tooth still need treatment?

Yes. Baby teeth guide the adult teeth and can develop painful infections just like permanent ones, so a hurting cavity should be treated either way.
